Anerva Margaret Friedman, 90, died Monday, June 19, 2006 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living, after suffering for several years from dementia with Lewey bodies.

 

She was born July 9, 1915 in Gilbert, Minn., to Jacob and Hannah (Iru) Korpi.

 

She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1931 and attended Eveleth Junior College and Duluth State Teachers College. She taught in the St. Louis County schools at Sand Lake, Chisholm and Embarrass, Minn. In 1937 she married Pacy Friedman and settled in Duluth where she taught elementary school for 26 years at Cobb, Lincoln, Franklin and Endion. Upon retirement she volunteered as a Peer Counselor and Senior Guardian under the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and was the Director of the Resident Council at St. Ann's where she also volunteered in the gift shop and the library.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pacy; brothers, Jack Korpi and Arvo Korpi; and sisters, Ina Kutcher, Ailie Newman and Annis Kellog.

 

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Lawrence (Judith Giordan) Friedman of Pittsburgh, Penn., Thomas (LeeAnn) Friedman of Framingham, Mass.; her daughter, Peg (Harry Goldfine) of Duluth; granddaughters, Heidi (Brad) Safford of Framingham, Mass., Jennifer (Brian) Carr of Salem, Mass.; grandsons, Michael and Spencer Friedman both of Framingham, Mass., and Joe Goldfine of Madison, Wisc.; great grandchildren, Kayla Safford, Andrew Safford and Alexa Carr.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. John Ipsen, Dr. Peter Miller and Kathy Cox for their compassionate care and guidance through this difficult disease, and Anerva's loving, kind caregivers at Mount Royal Pines III and Diamond Willow Assisted Living.
